October Dress Project - A Leap Year

October is my favorite month. I love Autumn and pumpkins and Halloween and crisp air and fallen leaves and sweaters and the October Dress Project.

Only this year, I won't have that last part.

I have participated in the October Dress Project for the last four Octobers, and I had every intention of participating again this year. Then something big changed - I got offered a new job. I start my new job next week, Oct. 10.

And I am so super excited about my new job! And I'll talk about that in a minute! But for now, a little mourning over missing my favorite annual challenge. I really considered doing ODP again this year, but I just can't help feeling like wearing the same dress every day for my first three weeks at a new job would somehow leave a bad first impression...

I did look at dresses. I did try to find something that I could easily disguise from day to day. I considered toggling between two dresses even. And with two days to go, I even made a snap judgment and ordered a dress from Amazon, which arrived on Sept 29th. However, it was too small, and I had to return it. With no time left and a real concern about coming across as super weird at my new job, I decided to skip this year's ODP. A leap year, if you will.

I am sad.

But! I am happy! Because I am starting a new job, a new awesome job! I am going to be the Director of Communications for a very awesome humanitarian organization! (And even though finding out which organization that is ought to be extremely easy with a simple Google search, I do *try* to keep a few things in my life anonymous, at least here on my blog.) I am ridiculously excited about this new opportunity, and even though I'm sad to miss ODP this year and I'll be sad to leave "BANPO" ("Big Anonymous Non Profit Organization" which again could easily be searched for), I really cannot wait to open this new chapter in my life. Working for VAHO ("Very Awesome Humanitarian Organization") is an incredible opportunity, one that will lead to all kinds of personal and professional development for me. I get to help others AND do what I love, all at once. Can anyone ask for better?

So, there will be no dress pictures this October from me. Sad. Maybe, even though I'm now two days behind, I'll replace it with some other Fall-ish challenge. Ideas?

P.S. Half marathon update: I ran/walked (mostly walked) 4.5 miles today. Outdoor training is way harder than treadmill training. I might be the only human alive who prefers the treadmill.

It's a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood!

I woke up to 47 degrees outside. Ahhh bliss. I got out my winter clothes box. Rediscovering all those winter items was like Christmas. I couldn't decide which chunky sweater to wear today!

Lolly had a soccer game at 9am. Jaguar woke me up at 6. I moseyed around all morning in my jammies while my dress dried, did some cleaning, then started a delicious breakfast which I intended to bring through to Scott for breakfast in bed... when I realized that the game STARTED at 9, not that I had to LEAVE at 9! It was 8.20, and I was still completely not ready. I frantically woke Scott up, had him get Lolly ready for soccer while I had to haphazardly choose the first sweater in the box - no time to lovingly look through them all - and pull my hair up in a messy ponytail. No make-up. I scraped my delicious spicy scrambled eggs and two sausages into a Tupperware bowl, filled Lolly's water bottle, and we bolted out the door.

So my quickly put-together outfit today consists of The Dress as a skirt with a burgundy jumper over it, yellow tights and my furry boots.

I love the Fall!

After the game (which they won), Lolly and I went to a birthday party for a boy in her kindergarten class at the skating rink. In my rush this morning, I did manage to grab his present but not my camera. So I got only a couple pictures on my phone, which takes horrible photos.

It's been a long time since I've put on a pair of skates - two decades perhaps? - but Lolly asked me to skate with her. I clumsily guided her around the rink a couple of times until she tripped me up and I fell on my knee and called it a day. I'm too old and I value my life too much for skating. Lolly had fun though. She was the only girl who showed up.

She's not wearing her dress today, opting to stay in her soccer gear.

Fifi is wearing her dress, but barely. Is wearing your dress tucked into your jeans and covered completely by a sweatshirt cheating?

No idea what the long face is all about.

It's still gorgeously cool outside, in the 60s, so I'm now heading outside to watch the kids play and soak up the beautiful Autumn weather. I love October!

ODP Days 29, 30 and - Finally - 31!

Ohhh what a long and not fun month this has been! So different from last year when I could've kept up with the Project for another month. I loved doing this last year; I pretty much hated it this year. I nearly gave up so many times. Two days of the month I never even wore The Dress at all. But finally, the 31st has come and I am able to say I *mostly* made it.

Day 29:

Getting lazy with ideas, I wore The Dress with a black long-sleeved shirt, black leggings and a burgandy floral scarf. Brown flats.

Day 30:

Practically the same outfit as the day before, except the (same) black shirt was UNDER The Dress, and I changed scarves. And shoes. Not well-pictured, but I'm wearing nude heels. And there is an Lolly hiding behind me.

Day 31 - Halloween:

I've been waiting to wear this Harry Potter t-shirt with built-in black cape for weeks. Annoyingly, you can't see the attached cape in this photo. Today the outift cum costume consisted of The Dress with a Griffindor student shirt with cape (to represent a robe), grey school knee socks and brown flats. I wore my quickly-becoming-favourite chunky brown necklace, some brown earrings and my hair pulled back in bobby pins, the world's easiest way to fix frizzy hair. I called my costume 'Harry Potter Movie Extra'.

The kids had fun this Halloween. Usually I like to get really creative at Halloween and make fun costumes and make fun decorations, but this year, we had to go simple and make do with what we have. I did buy both girls butterfly wings, which they wore at differing times, but those wings and my t-shirt were the only Halloween costume pieces I bought this year. The rest just consisted of what we already had. How's that for Simplicity, eh?

Over the course of yesterday and today, the kids have chosen multiple Halloween costumes for their multiple events.

Fifi is doing 'Red Ribbon Week' at school, so while her outfits haven't exactly been 'costumes', I'm going to refer to them as such. The first day was Inside Out Day, and as I showed in the previous post, she wore Her Dress for the last time on that day. Tuesday was 50's Day, so we put together as 50's-ish an outfit as possible. Yesterday was 'wear camouflage or hunter's orange' day (which, what?). Having nothing of the sort, I took an XL men's orange jack-o-lantern t-shirt from my mom that she didn't need and took it in down the sides to make Fifi a jack-o-lantern dress. (Never got a photo of that. Grr.) Then last night we took the kids to a local church's 'Trunk or Treat', and Fifi wore her Hermione costume. This she also wore to school today for Book Character Day. I checked her out of school at lunch time to go to a Fall Carnival at my mom's work, and she changed into her butterfly costume. We came home from that, had dinner, and then prepared for Trick or Treating in the neighborhood. For that, she put on her Portuguese Princess costume.

Lolly's various costumes included being a Spanish Dancer last night to Trunk or Treat, and then she dressed as a 'Dora Butterfly' for our local library's Halloween party. This consisted of wearing orange shorts and a pink shirt like Dora, but with butterfly wings. I'm highly annoyed at myself for not getting a picture of this either. For the Fall Carnival, she changed into a Dorothy costume, and then for Trick or Treating in the neighborhood, we designed a very spontaneous last-minute costume (because all of a sudden nothing else apparently would do) of SuperGirl - her Superman cape, red tights and a black leotard.

And Master Jaguar, too, went through a few outfits. Last night he went as Baby Harry Potter - easiest costume ever, just a lightening streak on his forehead. All day today he was dressed as a skeleton until dinner when he covered himself in food. Not sure what to change him into for Trick or Treating, I suddenly got the idea to try him in his kilt - half to see if it still fits. It does, so for Trick or Treating, he went as Lil Robert Burns.

Ow! My scar!

Oh, and last? I really need to show you what we had for dinner...

ODP Day 15: Hump Day!

Seriously need to get my
screen repaired so I can take
good selfies again.
At last! Half way there! Or, technically, tomorrow at noon is half way there, since there are 31 days in October, but who's counting? (Me!)

I put on The Dress this morning assuming Lolly's soccer game was still rescheduled for tonight. I wore my Lil Red Bananas t-shirt over The Dress to support my kid's team, along with a red running jacket (I bought three of these running jackets, I love them) and just a pair of black sporty shoes. I even put on red heart earrings. However, her game was cancelled midday due to rain and the flooded soccer fields, so I kind of wasted an outfit. Hey ho!

That was seriously the least blurry picture of the ten my children took of me. Sheesh.

Fifi wore Her Dress with her turquoise sequin-y 'Peace' shirt and red tights and silver flats. She tried to borrow another one of my necklaces this morning, but after what happened the last time, I just helped her select one of her own, a silver and gold heart locket that one of her grandmothers gave her - can't remember if it was my mom or Scott's.  She was even sporting the side ponytail look, very tween.  She wore the shirt over the dress to cover the orange juice stains from yesterday. Which reminds me, I need to go put that in the washing machine.

*Leaves computer for a few minutes*

I'm back. One load of lights going.

So! The Pumpkin Patch!

I think the Hicks Family Farm Pumpkin Patch is better described in pictures. And since tonight I feel rather bereft of words (gies ma bed!), let these photos speak thousands for me.

(No that wasn't a pun.  There really is a corn maze.)  (But corn maize would've been a good pun if I'd meant it.)

ODP Weekend Days 12 & 13: Slummin' It.

It's the weekend. I had nowhere to be, so I didn't bother wasting precious ideas on The Stripes.

Yesterday, the kids were supposed to have soccer games, but as we left our house, some raindrops started falling. I checked the soccer website, and it had announced only four minutes prior that games were ON. So we pulled out of the driveway and headed towards the playing fields. Minutes later, it turned into a downpour. I pulled over and called the Team Mom Angie to see what was up. According to the coach, she said, games were on. In the downpour. With the lightening. I started griping to Marion about how there was no way I was taking my baby out in this and the kids can't play in this and this is dangerous with the lightening and so on and so forth. (Fifi in the back seat started chanting, 'Mummy's turning into an American!' because I refused to sit through a rainy soccer game, which she apparently deemed highly un-Scottish of me.) Then Angie called back to say the games had definitely been cancelled. We rejoiced and got Shipley's Donuts to take home instead.

I'd been wearing my Lil Red Bananas t-shirt (Lolly's team), but when the game got called, I went home and changed out of it. The game is rescheduled for Tuesday, so I figured it was best to save that particular ensemble for then. I changed into ultra-casual this:

Obviously, from this picture, you can tell, it stopped raining later. I didn't get a photo until we headed out for tea at 5pm. I'm simply wearing The Stripes with a gray short-sleeved hooded top and a black beaded necklace. I think I just threw on a pair of shoes, I didn't pay much attention.

Fifi, after changing out of her soccer uniform, decided she was tired of the Project. She asked if she could take Saturday and Sundays off. Most of the day she instead wore a Christmas jumper and a sparkly dress around her waist like a skirt. I told her she couldn't wear that out to dinner though, and reluctantly she changed back into Her Dress. I cheered her up by letting her borrow a necklace of mine (which she promptly snapped) and one of my hats. She added the pink stripy blazer and sparkly red heels.

Today was my mother-in-law's last day here (tear, sniff). We didn't have anything really planned, just spending a few more hours together relaxing. We did make a quick trip into Walmart this morning, and had McDonald's while we were at it, so I put on The Stripes. I layered it with a tan-colored tunic and brown beaded necklace and earrings and brown flats. Lolly took a photo of me when we got back. Jaguar photo-bombed it.

It is abundantly clear from this blurry photo that my legs have a long way to go before they match the tan on my arms. Ick.

Fifi got very excited suddenly about getting her picture made. To Walmart, she'd only worn simply Her Dress, but for the photo, she went wild with a red scarf, a pink hat (Lolly's) and giraffe ears (also Lolly's). Lolly was not impressed.

The rest of the day today, before Granny left, we played outside with kites and did some outside Halloween decorating. When Granny left for the airport with Scott, however, it was an utter meltdown. My poor girls wailed, my poor Mummy-in-law cried, I cried, Jaguar cried because everyone else was crying... it wasn't pretty. I changed into my pajamas right then (4pm) and made a batch of brownies, which I proceeded to eat straight out of the oven. Then I cleaned. Anything to keep from feeling sad about saying goodbye once again to my Other Mother.

My real Mother and David came over for dinner later on after Scott helped David move some furniture. It made me feel less lonely having my mommy around. The house felt too quiet without Marion. Mom helped me rearrange some furniture in the living room and my bedroom to accommodate for my new desk they got me, at which I am sitting right now in my new Pampered Chef 'office' space. We had steak and okra for dinner, played with my dog Gracie and put the kids to bed.

Now, it's time for me to get in bed too. Weekday mornings start awfully early around here; school starts at ten to eight!!

Rainbows

It's a Friday, and Fifi was grumpy on the way home from school.

While in the car, she was sobbing about something or other that didn't actually matter in the grand or even tiny scheme of things, when out from behind a building I spotted the most vibrant rainbow I'd ever seen.

Interrupting her calamity, I cried, 'Look at that rainbow!'

Fifi stopped crying for a moment, and she too was awed. It was stunning.

'Quick, Fifi, let's chase this rainbow!' I began driving excitedly, searching for a perfect view of it in a place we could pull over, but buildings kept getting in the way. I wanted to pull over as soon as I could so we could get a great view of it before it disappeared. We drove all the way down the road to our home when finally we found a clearing right in front of our house. There was even a parking space.

From there, we could see that the rainbow arched perfectly from one end to the other, glowing more brightly than any I'd ever seen, and the perfect second full rainbow was visible above it. Fifi and I jumped out of the car and started snapping shots with my camera. She was squealing with glee, and I was only slightly less childish in my exuberance. It was phenomenal. It was absolutely gorgeous.

We stood and admired this wonder of nature for a long time before the rain ushered us inside the house. We ran up the stairs hoping to get a good view from our front window, but by the time we got in, the rainbow had disappeared. But Fifi's spirits were lifted, and so were mine.

I am thankful for little wonders of nature that bring delight to young hearts and older ones alike.
